Fun Fact: The Township of Adjala, in Simcoe County was named after the wife of Chief Tecumseh, while the Town of Tosorontio was named after the Huron word for “beautiful mountain”.
Beginning in the 1820’s, settlement began in the south part of the Township. The Irish who came to Adjala began naming their communities after their hometowns in Ireland or after prominent pioneer families who first settled in the area. The sandy soils of Tosorontio provided habitat for the vast vistas of pine trees, which supported as many as seven large sawmills and provided further incentive to come to the area.
In 1994 the former Township of Adjala and the former Township of Tosorontio were amalgamated into The Township of Adjala-Tosorontio.
The area is comprised of numerous villages and hamlets. The communities include: Achill, Airlie, Athlone, Ballycroy, Cedarville, Colgan, Connor, Everett, Glencairn, Hockley, Keenansville, Lisle, Loretto, Rosemount, Sheldon, Tioga and Tuam.
